Dear Tina

Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by constant tension on the hair, such as that created by an over-tight of weaves, hair pieces, hair extentions, ponytail, plaiting or through using too tight rollers to style the hair. The action of pulling on the hair over a long period of time results in the gradual shrinking of the hair follicle and so the hairs produced become finer and finer. So be very careful when using a hair weaving system.

More specifically, Naomi is probably suffering from traction alopecia which isn't caused so much by the weight of the weave but rather the tensile forces (tension) exerted on her hair during the application of the weave.
I strongly disagree with the idea of having your hair "chemically treated once every 12 weeks" as suggested above. Why not try some less fashionable but healthier alternatives such as emu oil application and herbal, vitamin and mineral supplementation? Chances are you'll see better results with fewer negative side effects. Just my 2 cents of course 8-)

Dear Tina
Your should have suggested that you should have a routine blood test intially in order to rule out the obvious such as anaemia; thyriod and hormonal behaviour. These are some of the main causes of thinning hair in younger women. At the same time you could book in and see one of out Westminster trichologists who will be able to assist in a more direct fashion. In other words, we will be able to provide you with the answers to your questions at your initial consultation. Then you will be able to make an informed judgement as to what action is neccessary.
Please feel free to write back if you should have any further questions.

I have always been one to worry allot and have always coped ok, but over the past year with the pressures of a new job i have noticed my hair gradually become thinner. My GP suggested i start excerising and eating healthy, all of which i have been doing since i noticed the hair loss. None of the things i have tried have worked and my condition has become worse. What else is there left?

These tend to be round in shape, and about the size of a large coin. They develop quite quickly. A relative, friend, or hairdresser may be the first person to notice the bald patch or patches. Apart from the bald patch or patches, the scalp usually looks healthy and there is no scarring.

Jason the very best advice that I can give to you is to telephone us initially and speak to one of our Westminster trichologists and see if they can advise you over the telephone but I suspect that you would need to been seen in person to determine whether or not your alopecia is still treatable or whether the damage is of a permanent nature.
Call 0207 976 6868 and have a chat.

Corin the best thing to do is to book in to the Centre and see one of our experienced trichologists who will be able to diagnose and treat your hair loss condition straight away. The most important thing is to act immediately and seek advice by contacting the Centre as time wasted leads to more problems.

I am a 62 year old woman that has always had a very thick head of healthy hair. During the last 6 months I find that after a shower there is a lot of my hair in the drain and my hair has thinned considerably. When I sweep the floor I am finding a tremendous amount of my hair on the bottom of the broom. This did not start gradually. It's been happening for the past 6 months and getting worse. I take vitamins, my diet is very healthy however, I do have a lot of stress. What can I do. I am very seriously concerned. I don't know if it is falling out or breaking.

Increasing your testosterone through exercise (and there fore your DHT) can contribute to hair loss - but only if you are genetically predisposed. For those without the genes for common baldness (the medical term is androgenetic alopeica) you can exercise all you want and there will be no effect on your follicles. For those who have the tendency towards hair loss, the medication Propecia (finasteride) can block DHT (without lowering your testosterone) and minimize the effect that exercising will have on your hair. Visit www.BernsteinMedical.com for a thorough explanation of hair loss and hair loss solutions.

I think tropical treatment is better one because it has no side effect.
