Up until 10 years ago if you were losing your hair or were suffering from a scalp disorder or a stress orientated hair loss problem your choices were limited.

You could contact your GP who might be sympathetic but generally dismissive and clueless or contact one of the 3 or 4 trichological clinics that there were in London in those days.

Now it’s a minefield, there are hundreds it seems and new ones springing up and disappearing overnight.

So how do you choose a top hair expert (trichologist), a specialist that really knows what they are talking about?

Quite simply interview them. Phone them up and talk to them, find out how they work and what their results are.

Book in for a one to one consultation with a verified trichologist. If you are not getting an open reply or you feel uncomfortable on the phone then simply move on and try the next one, the choice is huge.

Be wary of the large commercial clinics or centres that spend all their time talking about competition on their websites when they should be focusing on you the patient.

These centres only attack other centres when they have something to hide.

The key is to talk to our centre and make us work for you the patient.

Ask us to try and give you the answers over the phone.

There really is nothing too difficult here as we are truly confident that we provide the very best all round treatments and patient care that is second to none.

It is critical that your choice is correct in the first instance as a year wasted at the wrong centre or on the wrong treatments can be the difference between success and failure and a regret that is with you for life.

This 39 year old Patient John, came to us in January this year. He was suffering from Male Pattern Baldness (MPB). He had been using over the counter Regaine for sometime with little if any responses in his view. As you can see things are now starting to happen and John is extremely pleased with his progress so far. “Fingers crossed and the crown might disappear entirely” says John.

In today’s increasingly stressful world, the number of women suffering from hair loss is increasing. We all want to look our best and damage to a woman’s “crowning glory” can be a uniquely upsetting affliction.

Hair loss in woman can generally be seen evenly across the scalp, without definite bald patches. If this is happening to you, the following conditions may be affecting you:

Naomi Campbell Britt Eckland Jenny Bond

Diffuse hair loss is a gradual thinning of the hair as opposed to a straightforward bald patch and is the most common type of hair loss in women. The replacement of old hairs by new hairs is slowed down so that the hair becomes sparse and the scalp can be seen clearly through the hair. The causes can be numerous and include stress, restriction of the blood supply, a poor nervous system and hormonal influences.

Androgenetic alopecia (female pattern baldness) in women is often linked to hormonal changes with the hair loss following events such as the menopause, childbirth or as a result of stopping or starting oral contraceptive pills. The hair loss is generally more uniform over the scalp than in the male counterpart, but also results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone. The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be over sensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.

Telogen Effluvium occurs when the growing phase of the hair is interrupted prematurely causing the hair follicles to enter the telogen (resting) phase of the hair cycle earlier than normal. Two to four months later, following the normal cyclic pattern, diffuse shedding of the hair begins. When this happens there are not enough hairs left in the anagen phase, or growing phase, and the result is diffuse thinning of the hair.

Pregnancy will also affect hair production. Hormone levels increase as the pregnancy begins and slow down the hair growth cycle. Hairs that should stop growing continue to grow beyond their usual life cycle. Often this means that the hair appears to grow thicker as more hairs are present than normal. Following the birth, hormone levels change very quickly and hairs that were growing beyond their normal lifespan enter the telogen phase at this time and begin to fall out. This can sometimes appear to happen all at once and can be very worrying to the new mother.

Late onset thinning can be seen in diffuse hair loss across the scalp as density is reduced gradually. This is due to age-related hormonal changes as the natural reduction of oestrogen/progesterone production results in the hair follicles becoming smaller and smaller. These produce finer and finer hair until there is a general reduction in overall density.

If your hair loss is patchy you may be suffering from a form of alopecia:

Alopecia Areata is an extremely common condition and will affect 1% to 2% of the population at some point in their lives. Most sufferers are children and young adults (below 40 years old), though it can affect people of all ages. The hair loss is sudden and manifests itself in small, smooth-skinned patches that are likely to gradually widen with time. It can also affect the sufferer’s nails, giving them a pitted, ridged or brittle appearance. The exact cause is still unknown, although current theories include an auto-immune disease, stress or suggest a genetic basis. If the hair loss progresses until all the scalp hair is lost this is known as alopecia totalis or as alopecia universalis if all the body hair is lost as well.

Pseudopelade is characterised by the development of small, smooth patches without any clinical changes other than transient erythema (redness). The initial patch is usually on the crown of the head, but can occur anywhere on the scalp. It is generally regarded as a clinical syndrome, which may be the end result of any one of a number of different pathological processes due to a weakened immune system.

Hair loss can also have traumatic origins:

Chemical trauma can be caused to the hair by bleaching, relaxing, perming or even dying the hair. The chemicals involved in these processes can damage the hair’s protein structure, making the hair dehydrated and brittle and often causing hair loss. As well as damaging the hair’s protein structure, these chemicals are also not good for the scalp and can irritate it.

Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by constant tension on the hair, such as that created by an over-tight ponytail, plaiting or through using too tight rollers to style the hair. The action of pulling on the hair over a long period of time results in the gradual shrinking of the hair follicle and so the hairs produced become finer and finer.

Injury to the body or surgery and its associated anaesthetics and medications can also cause an interruption of the normal growth cycle. A relatively minor injury can result in disproportionably severe hair loss.

These are just a few of the reasons for hair loss. In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists.

Stress can be an aggravator in almost all cases of hair loss and an accurate diagnosis will always, at the very least, take some of the stress away from you.

No matter how bad you may think your hair loss or scalp disorder is it is never too late to seek advice.

You may be thinking:

“No sorry there is nothing we can do in your particular case”

Many people think it’s just too late for them and are resigned to baldness.

Ravneet Ahluwalia finds out how women can avoid the hair loss that appears to be affecting troubled supermodel Naomi Campbell

Naomi has been doing it from age 14, so there’s a price to pay”

As if Naomi Campbell didn’t have enough problems. On top of her traumatic love life, anger issues and community service for her air- rage assault, she now appears to be going bald.

Pictures of the model’s receding hairline have appeared in the media of late – and experts are blaming years of wearing weaves.

But can weaves cause baldness? In London’s Afro- Caribbean community they have overtaken braids and chemical treatments as the most popular way of styling hair.

Trichologist, or hair specialist, Renee Lagrange says they are fine – if your hair is healthy. “ If it is breaking or thinning, do not consider it,” she warns. “ People think instead of chemically straightening the hair when it is weak, they will give it time to recover by putting in a weave – but they are causing more damage.”

And the British weather adds to the problem.

“ Afro- Caribbean hair tends to lose moisture in the UK because it is not as humid here as in African or Caribbean climates,” Lagrange explains. “ This causes hair to become brittle and break. Putting stress on weak hair with the weight of a weave will cause it to thin or fall out.

“ With Naomi, her patch is likely to be due to the fact she has worn very heavy hair for years. The weight has taken its toll and pulled the hair out.”

Celebrity hairdresser Errol Douglas, who has styled Naomi and Kelly Rowland, agrees. “ There’s no doubt about it – Naomi is going bald. If you’re constantly wearing weaves you’re not giving your hair a chance to recover and she’s changing it all the time in order to have the right look,” he says. “ She has been doing this since she was 14 and she’s now 38, so there’s a price to pay.”

Even if your hair is healthy, you need to take care if you are putting in a weave. Braidin weaves are the best option as glue- in weaves use chemicals that can damage the hair and scalp – but you must be careful not to braid the hair too tightly as it can lead to alopecia. Hair professionals agree that it is best to keep a weave in for only three months and have three months’ break to let the hair and scalp recover.

Lagrange says if you do want a straight look – and your hair is in good condition – the best option is to get it professionally treated with chemicals once every 12 weeks. More frequently than this can cause damage.

Experts say that everyone can be treated and with time and patience the hair will recover. But is it too late for Naomi or could she soon be sporting a notsofashionable slaphead? “ She would see a difference if she left her hair for a year and had intensive treatment,” says Douglas. “ But Naomi would never be seen without a weave. I’ve given her all this advice but she’s not going to do it – she just needs to take some time out.”

This Patient came to us in the first week of May this year. She was suffering from Severe Female Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia).

Androgenetic alopecia in women is often linked to hormonal changes with the hair loss following events such as the menopause, childbirth or as a result of stopping or starting oral contraceptive pills.

We prescribed the following treatments:

Vitastim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser: This stimulant is recommended to help stabilise hair loss and strengthen existing hair. It is a natural hop-based solution that works as a vasodilator to increase blood circulation in the scalp and so enable healthy hair growth. It also contains a multi-vitamin complex to help catalyse the process of conversion of amino acids into keratin hair cells and accelerate growth and diameter of the hair from the dermal papilla.

Biostim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser: This stimulant contains a very effective natural 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It reduces the amount of 5-alpha reductase in the scalp and thereby reduces the formation of DHT, stabilising hair loss and encouraging a healthy growth cycle.

We prescribed the following treatments:

Minoxidil 5%+ Medroxy Progesterone Hair Growth Stimulant: Minoxidil is a vasodilator and dilates the blood capillaries responsible for blood supply to the hair follicles, thus allowing more blood to reach the hair follicles and encourage hair growth. Medroxy Progesterone is a synthetic hormone designed to block the conversion of testosterone to DHT or Dihydro-Testosterone.

Biostim 15%: This stimulant contains a very effective natural 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It reduces the amount of 5-alpha reductase in the scalp and thereby reduces the formation of DHT, stabilising hair loss and encouraging a healthy growth cycle.

Grandma told you that it was normal to lose 100 hairs a day. How did she know? Did she ever count them? Was that an average, or specific to you? Is it what you should expect at the age of 16 or 60?

No one knew. Until now, even dermatologists who specialize in hair loss took it as an unsubstantiated given that it’s normal to lose 100 hairs a day, based on the wisdom of the ages and backed by a mathematical equation. The equation assumes that the average head has 100,000 hairs, 10% of which are in the telogen, or resting, phase. That means they’re no longer growing, they’re getting ready to give it up, but they’re going to take about 100 days before they bail out and hit the shower floor, curl up in the sink drain or entwine themselves around the bristles of your brush. So 10% of 100,000 is 10,000. Divide that by 100 days and you get a daily loss of 100 hairs a day.

Not to split hairs, but the neatly figured math was based on…well, nothing. No one ever proved that we have an average of 100,000 hairs. “This number has been passed down without anyone ever questioning it,” says Dr. Jeffrey Miller, professor of dermatology at Penn State College of Medicine.

So instead of counting hairs, or assuming a number that’s normal, Miller and colleagues came up with a quick and reliable way to figure out if you’re balding. In a study published in this month’s Archives of Dermatology, researchers studied hair loss in 60 men, half age 20 to 40 and half age 40 to 60, all of whom had healthy heads of hair and no signs of going bald.

They were all given identical combs and told to shampoo every day for three days. On the fourth day, before shampooing, they each combed their hair forward over a pillow case for 60 seconds. Then they counted the hairs on the pillow case.

The average number was almost identical for both age groups: 10.2 hairs on the pillow case for the younger group, 10.3 hairs for the older group. And when the same men repeated the drill six months later, the counts remained the same, indicating they were in no immediate danger of balding.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of comb or brush you use as long as you use the same one,” says Miller. “And make sure it’s clean when you start.” The range of hair loss in the study was 0 to 78 hairs among the younger men, and 0 to 48 among the older men, though most lost about 10 hairs in the 60 seconds of combing.

The number of hairs on your pillow matters less than that the number remains consistent. Do it three days a month, and track it for six months. “It’s a simple, objective home test for a condition that’s fraught with emotion,” says Miller.

If the number of hairs shed remain consistent with each 60-second comb-out, you’re probably not over-shedding. But if there’s an increase, you might consult a dermatologist for an evaluation. Hair loss can result from low thyroid output, from low levels of iron or from some medications.

The study was funded by Merck & Co., which makes Propecia, a drug to treat hair loss. And Miller is a consultant for Pfizer Inc., which makes Rogaine and is testing other drugs for hair loss. But neither company influenced the study, he says.

Miller is currently working on a similar study of women’s hair loss.

We prescribed the following treatments:

Vitastim Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser:
This stimulant is recommended to help stabilise hair loss and strengthen existing hair.

Follicle Builder Hair Strengthener: This stimulant is formulated to increase cell metabolism and nutrient concentration at the hair root to increase hair cell production. It also has the effect of extending the hair growth cycle, improving overall hair density.

Other treatments
Various other treatments may be used or advised. These include the following:

Special light therapy or phototherapy (PUVA) has been used with some limited success. This treatment requires many light therapy sessions in a hospital out-patient department.

The immunosuppressant medicine called ciclosporin usually works well to cause hair re-growth in extensive alopecia areata. However, its use is limited by potential side-effects. Also, hair loss often recurs when the medication is stopped.

Dermatography (tattooing) can be used to simulate eyebrows that have fallen out.

Counselling is sometimes helpful for people who find it difficult to cope with hair loss.

Remember to use sun block or a hat to protect bald patches when out in the sun.
There is not enough evidence to say how effective complementary treatments are in treating alopecia areata. (For example, acupuncture, aromatherapy, etc.)

We sort fact from fiction when it comes to your hair

Can baldness be cured?

“Take the legs of a newt, the fingernails of an insurance salesman…” Amid the bogus pills, internet potions and improbable scalp-weaves there’s genuine hope for the six million Brits afflicted by male pattern baldness (MPB). “Among the estimated 300,000 hair loss treatments available, two have been clinically proven to slow MPB and help re-growth,” says Gary Heron, trichologist at The Hair Centre in London. They are finasteride (available as the one-a-day private prescription pill Propecia) and minoxidil, an externally applied solution sold as Regaine. Research in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found 80% of men using finasteride retained more hair than placebo-takers, and two thirds actually re-grew hair. Roughly half of men using minoxidil staved off further balding, and 15% recorded re-growth.

Does baldness come from my Mum’s side?

Tony Soprano could pin plenty on his ma, but like any thinning man he can’t let the maternal side of the family take the full rap for his forehead expansion. “Genetics do play a major part in male pattern baldness, but the gene can come from either parent,” says Heron. Just because your Dad’s as bald as Britney in breakdown, it doesn’t mean you will be, but your grandma’s wispy moustache doesn’t mean she’s in the clear: “MPB can often skip a generation,” adds Heron.

Topical immunotherapy

It is thought that topical immunotherapy is the most effective option for people with extensive alopecia areata. However, this treatment is only done by some skin specialist and so you will need to be referred to one of these specialists for it.

How topical immunotherapy works is not clear. A substance is put on affected skin to to make the skin react like an allergy. The most commonly used substance is DPCP (diphencyprone). Increasing strengths of this substance are placed on the affected skin once a week over several weeks until the skin looks like it has mild dermatitis (eczema). The skin reaction seems to affect the process involved in causing alopecia areata in some way to allow hair to re-grow. Side-effects from topical immunotherapy can be troublesome. For example, some people develop severe skin reactions. Treating children with topical immunotherapy is controversial.

In a large study of people with extensive alopecia areata, topical immunotherapy caused good hair re-growth in 3 in 10 cases after six months which increased to nearly 8 in 10 cases after 32 months of treatment. (It worked less well in people with alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis.) In those where it works, initial re-growth does not occur for 12-24 weeks. Once re-growth occurs, treatment can be stopped but in many cases the hair loss then recurs. Therefore, in many cases, regular maintenance treatment is needed to keep the hair loss from returning.

Dithranol

Dithranol is thought to be less effective than topical immunotherapy, but works in some cases. It is applied each day to the whole scalp if there is extensive hair loss and left for 20-60 minutes before washing it off. One study showed that it helps hair re-growth in about 1 in 4 cases, but takes many weeks of treatment. Side-effects such as itchiness, redness, and scaling are common with dithranol. Dithranol is not widely used for alopecia areata because it is messy to use.

For people worried about their premature hair loss, scientists have pioneered a technique that would help provide a cure - hair cloning.

The new technique, known as follicular cell implantation works by replicating remaining hair strands and would eventually help millions of people to regain a full head of their own hair. It can potentially re-grow a limitless supply hair for individuals who have become bald during cancer treatment, from suffering severe burns, or simply the onset of age, reports the Telegraph

The cell therapy, during clinical trials, increased hair count in at least two thirds of patients after six months, and four out of five if the scalp is stimulated beforehand through gentle abrasions, which encourage hair growth.

The new technique is a breakthrough in hair restoration and has been granted 1.9 million pounds by the government. The procedure is being developed by Intercytex, a British company based in Manchester.
